Sex Offender Sentencing

Good recidivism methodology analysis as well in US v. McIlrath, No. 07-1266 (7th Cir. Jan. 10, 2008) (available here), which has been described as a must-read.

Why do we care who is more likely to be a repeat offender? If not, why do we create public registries? So the public registry is designed to notify the public of risk of danger. But knowing the past is not enough to know the future. We must more specifically analyze the past in terms of likely future conduct. Is there any good way to do this?
